Chicago Fireboat Steals the Show During Polar Vortex

Chicago’s frigid temperatures brought us an unexpected social media darling: the Christopher Wheatley, our city’s iconic fireboat. Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook feeds were flooded with stunning visuals of the bright red vessel breaking through the ice on the Chicago River. The scene perfectly captured the stark beauty of winter in our beloved “Chiberia.”

A Closer Look at the Christopher Wheatley

Boat Safe Chicago had the privilege of touring the Christopher Wheatley in 2023 and was thoroughly impressed by the crew’s professionalism and the boat’s capabilities. This 90-foot vessel boasts a range of features, including powerful water cannons and, of course, ice-breaking technology.

Honoring a Fallen Hero

But what’s the story behind the name of this social media star vessel? The Christopher Wheatley is named after a Chicago firefighter, Christopher Wheatley, who tragically lost his life in 2010, battling a fire in the trendy West Loop neighborhood. He was only 31 years old at the time of his passing. Coincidentally, the Chicago fire boat was built by Hike Metal Custom Boat and Ship Builders in Wheatley, Ontario, Canada.

Capturing the Moment

The Christopher Wheatley’s recent internet fame has fueled a frenzy among photographers, particularly drone photographers eager to capture breathtaking aerial shots of the vessel. One such photographer is Nikola Ranguelov, a User Experience Architect who has called Chicago home since he was a teenager. Photography, once a hobby, has become Nikola’s passion, and he particularly enjoys capturing stunning images like the one featured in our cover photo. You can follow Nikola on his LinkedIn profile Nikola’s LinkedIN profile, or check out his drone photography on his Instagram page @nickdotvr.

A Chicago Tradition

We hope the crew of the Christopher Wheatley stays warm this winter! We can’t wait to see them return to their summer lunch break spot at Pizzeria Portofino, where they dazzle our tourists! We are grateful to the Christopher Wheatley crew and the entire Chicago Fire Department, for keeping the memory of firefighter Christopher Wheatley alive.
