Happy Earth Day! Let’s Protect Our Great Lakes Together.

Today is Earth Day, a moment to celebrate the incredible natural beauty that surrounds us and recommit to protecting it. The Great Lakes are more than just a breathtaking view; they are the lifeblood of our region, providing fresh water, endless recreation, and a home for diverse wildlife.

Boat Safe Chicago is excited to share that the Adopt-a-Beach Spring Kickoff is officially starting this week (April 24-26)! Over 250 cleanups have already been scheduled across the region, proving that when it comes to our lakes, this community shows up.

There is a Beach for Everyone

Whether you are spending your day at one of Chicago’s bustling city beaches, exploring the towering dunes at Holland State Park, or finding peace on a remote northern Wisconsin shoreline, there is a cleanup near you.

You might even find yourself at the famous Oval Beach in Saugatuck. Michigan. Did you know it’s consistently ranked among the best in the world? It has been named one of the “Top 25 Beaches in the World” by Condé Nast Traveler and one of the “Top 5 Beaches in the USA” by MTV. It’s a true West Michigan gem, and keeping it pristine is a job for all of us.

Why It Matters

Every year, hundreds of thousands of pieces of litter end up on Great Lakes shorelines—and about 85% of that debris is plastic. When we leave litter behind, it eventually breaks down into microplastics that threaten our water quality and aquatic life.

Keeping our shorelines clean is also about personal safety. Removing glass, sharp plastics, and other hazards ensures that our beaches, parks, and marinas remain safe, welcoming spaces for families, pets, and fellow boaters.

The Power of Volunteering

Beyond the environmental impact, there is a profound personal benefit to getting involved:

  • A Mood Boost: Research consistently shows that “doing good” triggers the release of endorphins, often called the “helper’s high.”
  • Community Connection: Whether you join an existing team or bring a group of friends, cleaning the beach is a fantastic way to connect with like-minded neighbors and build a stronger community.
  • Lasting Impact: The data collected by Adopt-a-Beach volunteers helps scientists and policymakers understand the sources of pollution, leading to better protection for the lakes for years to come.

How to Join the Fun

Whether you’re a solo volunteer, a school group, or a business looking for a meaningful team-building activity, everyone is welcome!

  1. Find a Cleanup: Visit the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach website to find a location near you. Thank you, Alliance for the Great Lakes!
  2. Be a Leader: If you don’t see a cleanup at your favorite local spot, you can become a Team Leader and host your own!

Let’s start the season off right by keeping our Great Lakes healthy, safe, and beautiful. Happy Earth Day!
