How to Choose the Right Captain for Your Summer Boat Charter ⚓

Planning a day out on the water with friends or family is one of the best parts of summer. But if you are chartering a vessel, there is one critical decision that can make or break your entire trip: choosing your charter boat captain.

When you sign a standard recreational bareboat charter agreement, you are legally in charge of the vessel. Typically, these charters allow you to bring up to 12 guests (for a total of 13 passengers, assuming the boat’s capacity allows it). Because you are responsible for the boat and everyone on board, finding a competent, reliable captain is everything.

Here is what you need to know to ensure your big boat day goes exactly as planned, without getting left high and dry at the dock.

1. Shocking Truth About Recreational Charter Captains

Did you know that for certain recreational bareboat charters, the person driving the boat or yacht charter isn’t legally required by the government to hold a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) license?

When you rent a boat, the owner will usually hand you a list of “vetted” captains who are familiar with that specific vessel. However, some names on that list might simply be people the owner trusts to drive the boat, rather than licensed professionals.

You have to ask yourself: Are you comfortable with that? Or do you want someone who has completed the rigorous training, testing, medical screenings, and extensive paperwork required to hold and maintain a federal license?

How to Check Credentials:

  • If they claim to be a licensed captain: You have every right to ask to see their physical USCG merchant mariner credential. You can even verify it in real-time online via the Coast Guard’s official merchant mariner verification tool, which is smart since licenses can be suspended or revoked.
  • If they are an unlicensed captain: Ask to see their boating resume. How many years have they been operating? What size vessels do they usually handle? Have they had any recent accidents or incidents on the water?

2. What Happens When the “Vetted List” is Booked?

On a busy summer weekend, you might call every single person on the boat owner’s recommended list only to find out they are completely booked. As the charterer, you have the legal right to hire any captain you want.

If you have to turn to social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram to find a captain, you can find incredibly skilled professionals—but you have to do your homework. Check their references, look at photos of them operating similar vessels, and ask the same tough questions about their experience.

3. The Danger of the “Cheap” Captain

When it comes to maritime safety, you truly get what you pay for. An experienced, USCG-licensed 100-ton Master Captain with 20 years of experience handling yachts and commercial vessels is going to cost more than an unlicensed hobbyist. But who do you want at the helm when the weather turns, or a crowded harbor gets chaotic?

Going with the lowest bidder can also leave you stranded. We see it every season: a group hooks up with a captain for a “great deal” at $100 an hour. Then, the night before or the morning of the trip, another desperate charterer offers that same captain $200 or $300 an hour. Suddenly, the cheap captain “calls in sick,” disappears, and perhaps takes your deposit with them.

National peer-to-peer rental platforms do require their captains to be licensed, which brings a level of professionalism, but keep in mind that those platforms often take a massive cut of the captain’s pay. This can sometimes lead to lower levels of commitment than with a true local independent professional.

4. Your Playbook for a Flawless Boat Day

To protect your investment and your guests, follow this strategy:

  • Start with a reputable local company: Look up local boating businesses, check their Google Reviews, and read the bad reviews and newest reviews first. That is where the real truth hides.
  • Book early: There is a strictly limited supply of charter vessels, and an even tighter supply of top-tier, qualified captains. Don’t wait until the week of your event.
  • Work with dedicated networks: If you need to secure a trusted professional, look into established, dedicated local guiding networks.
