The sun is beating down on Lake Michigan, and the call of the water is getting louder. Whether you are a seasoned boater or a complete novice, confidence is the difference between a stressful day on the waves and a perfect day. We are here to ensure your time on the water is nothing short of spectacular.

Safety First, Captain

Where can I find boat safety courses in Chicago? How about a Michigan boating course?  If you have been online searching for “boating classes near me”, “boating lessons near me”, or “learning to drive a boat, where can I get classes in Chicago?”, you have come to the right place. Boat Safe Chicago teaches classes in Chicagoland and beyond!

Understanding the rules of the road is essential for everyone sharing our waterways. For example, people often search: Are there any boat safety regulations in Chicago? Absolutely. In Illinois, any person born on or after January 1, 1998, is required to have a Boating Safety Certificate to operate a vessel powered by a motor of more than 10 horsepower. Additionally, state law requires all children under the age of 13 to wear a USCG-approved life jacket while on board any watercraft under 26 feet.

You need to know the rules of the state you are boating in! Beyond the legal requirements, we encourage everyone to wear a life jacket, especially if you do not know how to swim or will be consuming alcohol. Safety isn’t just about rules—it’s about looking out for your crew.

Premier Destinations & Smooth Transits from all over the Great Lakes!

What are the best places to dock a boat in Chicago? Chicago offers world-class options for every vibe:

  • Navy Pier Marina: This is one of our favorite marinas with access to beautiful skyline views, spectacular sunsets, and all of the amenities on Navy Pier.
  • The Chicago River: Other awesome places to dock include City Winery, which requires going through the Chicago Locks.

“If you are nervous about going through the Locks, we offer a course specially designed to ease your fears and help you get through the Locks calmly and safely. No more “lock anxiety”—just smooth sailing into the heart of the city. Do you need help with trip planning and filing a float plan? We have a class for that!”- Master Captain Brady
