Midwest Boating Winter Blues? 6 Ways to Keep the Spirit Alive!

Boats forming a curved line in water

For those of us who spend our summers on the Great Lakes or navigating the Midwest’s beautiful inland waterways, winter can feel like a long, grey hibernation. When the boat is shrink-wrapped and the docks are pulled up, it’s easy to lose that summertime spark.

However, the off-season doesn’t have to be a complete midwest boating slump. It’s the best time to recalibrate, focus on wellness, and prepare for the year’s first launch.

Here are six strategies to navigate the winter months and keep your internal compass pointed toward summer:

1. Leverage the “Anticipation Effect”

If your schedule and resources allow, plan a tropical getaway for mid-winter. Research shows that the anticipation of a trip often provides as much of a mood boost as the vacation itself. Even a long weekend away can break up the monotony and remind you that the sun still exists!

2. Move Your Body (No Gym Rat Status Required)

Exercise is a natural endorphin booster. You don’t need an intense workout to see the benefits; a 30–45-minute walk during your lunch break is enough to lift your spirits. Staying active now ensures you’re “boat-ready” the moment the weather breaks.

3. Fuel Up with Whole Foods

The “winter slump” is often exacerbated by processed foods. Focus on nutrient-dense “superfoods” such as purple sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli.

Frozen fruits and vegetables are as equally nutritious as their fresh counterparts.

We love making smoothies with frozen berries, and they also make a great snack on their own

Pro-Tip: Nutritionists suggest that while cooked broccoli is highly beneficial, pairing it with a small amount of raw broccoli can actually help your body absorb those nutrients more effectively!

4. Prioritize Real-World Connection

In an age of endless scrolling, we often lose hours to social media without making a single real connection. This winter, make it a point to:

  • Meet a friend for coffee.
  • Pick up the phone instead of texting.
  • Surprise someone: Write a handwritten card or letter. It’s a lost art that creates a lasting impact.

5. Bring the Waterfront Home

Surround yourself with “happy place” reminders. Decorate your office or living space with large-scale prints of your favorite days on the water, or keep a jar of seashells on your desk. These visual cues can provide a micro-dose of joy during the darkest months.

Whatever makes you smile makes the perfect addition to your space.

Thinking about painting your walls? Consider cerulean blue, which features a hue reminiscent of the sky and water.

6. Tackle “Life Admin” Now

Don’t waste a single Saturday of summer sitting in a waiting room! Use the winter months to knock out your routine maintenance:

  • Annual physicals and eye exams.
  • Dental cleanings.
  • Dermatologist check-ups: Especially important for those of us who spend all summer under the sun!

Summer isn’t as far away as it seems. By taking care of your health and your community now, you’ll be ready to hit the water at full throttle the moment the ice thaws.
